Public Works
Mission Statement
The mission of the Public Works Department maintains the infrastructure of Palmer. Our DPW includes 4 divisions- Highway, Parks, Cemetery, and Wastewater. Our Highway Division is responsible for maintaining the town roadways. The Parks Division maintains our fields and public parks. The Cemetery Division oversees the four cemeteries in Palmer. The Wastewater Division maintains our storm water related issues including street sweeping, culvert and storm sewer maintenance, repair, and replacement, ditch cleaning, waterway monitoring, pond inspections, and erosion flooding related issues.
Role of the Department
Throughout the year, much of the department’s scope of work is determined by the seasons and weather. Generally, in the Spring, Summer, and Fall months, crews concentrate efforts on maintenance of the roads and streets through street sweeping, patching potholes, repairing asphalt curbs, painting crosswalks, stop lines, railroad crossings, and traffic lines, mowing and trimming roadsides, fields, and town property, rubbish cleanup, parks maintenance, and public cemetery maintenance. Small construction projects such as rebuilding catch basins, manholes, drop inlets, drain lines, sidewalk repairs and assist other departments in other needs also occur during this time. In the Winter, attention is devoted to keeping the roads safe by being on call 24/7 to treat the roads during storms.
