General News Release 02/28/2007
Three Rivers water going to D. C.
Three Rivers Fire District's drinking water is traveling to the nation's capitol in May. Three Rivers drinking water was previously named best tasting water in MA during a fall Massachusetts Rural Water Association taste testing competition for all Massachusetts water systems. The District supplies water to the Three Rivers section of Palmer and a portion of South Belchertown.
The best tasting water from each state will be judged in a preliminary tasting round Tuesday morning , May 1, 2007 and then the final five entrants will vie for top honors at 12:00 noon at "The Annual Great American Water Taste Test 2007" held at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Washington D.C.
John L. Sasur Jr., water superintendent, will be escorting a sample of tap water that will be packaged in a cooler and immediately flown and hand delivered to the competition.
Congressmen and other distinguished judges typically evaluate the final samples based on taste, smell and clarity. This contest is held each year in conjunction with the National Rural Water Association (NRWA) annual meeting and will pit Three Rivers water against entries from across the nation. Prior competitions were held in every state to determine the one water system that will represent each state at this national event.
Typically, the town judged best tasting water in the U. S. becomes a destination where people travel great distances just to taste the water. Some towns even have negotiated with bottling companies to distribute their famous water.
Mr. Sasur noted, "Everyone likes the taste of our water which comes straight from the well. It is not that we do anything special here in Three Rivers, we just happened to be blessed with good water. I hope the judges in DC think so, too."
