Discussion: Pool at Palmer High School
Mary Ellen Blanchette and Sue North were present to give the Council on update on the pool at Palmer High School. Permission was given by the Superintendent on November 30, 2009 to open the pool. Thirty-one (31) PHS students have signed up for the swim team and there are fifty-six (56) children on the Palmer Stripper’s Team. They have raised $12,000 of the $20,000 needed to cover all expenses related to the pool for the swim season.
They are requesting that the Town Council consider funding any shortfall, if there is a shortfall in February.
They want to make the pool part of the community again and some kids are willing to lifeguard for community service hours.
They have also been contacted by a Longmeadow resident who is willing to work with the schools on ways to conserve energy.
No action taken by Council at this time.
Discussion: Legion Field Baseball Field
David Bussell was present to address the Council regarding a letter that he sent to the Town regarding foul balls and line drives hitting his house during baseball season.
Information was provided to the Council that Ray Remillard had obtained regarding a seasonal mesh enclosure which is 90 ft x 15 ft high. This enclosure would be put on top of the existing fence. It is on pulleys and would be installed at the beginning of the season and taken down at the end of the season. Estimated cost $3,400 - $4,000. This cost is much less than extending the fencing that is currently in place. The estimated cost of extending the existing fencing $10,000 - $12,000.
There was some discussion regarding contacting the other teams that use the field to see if they would be willing to contribute to the cost once a firm price is known.
Ray Remillard will provide the information that he has to Matt Streeter and this matter will be revisited by the Council prior to the start of baseball season.
